Cannery Row.
Cannery Row is a Monterey, California landmark. At the turn of the century Ocean View Avenue was alive with the bustling activity from the booming fishing industry. During World War I, demand for canned goods increased as did the number of cannery factories. Here, fish and sardines were caught, cleaned and canned and delivered to eager consumers. However by the end of World War II, over fishing greatly diminished the local sardine population and Cannery Row ceased to exist. Its epic revival, spurred on by John Steinbeck’s 1945 book Cannery Row, brought about many restoration and preservation projects. Today, this quaint waterfront street is filled with a variety of shops, restaurants and recreational activities. [Top]
