Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

An epic meeting of land and sea located at the northern end of the Big Sur coastline, this magical natural reserve features several walking and hiking trails, plenty of wildlife and a peaceful, serene environment. Also a marine sanctuary, Point Lobos State Reserve is a popular place for SCUBA diving, snorkeling and sea kayaking. Boasting dramatic cliffs against the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean, this incredible park is also a favorite of sea lions, sea otters and harbor seals.

SCUBA Diving

Point Lobos is also a marine reserve, meaning that the sights under the water are just as incredible as those on land. This is a popular place to SCUBA dive, snorkel and sea kayak, and you’ll find 70-ft kelp forests, colorful underwater plants and oddball invertebrates.

Nature Trails

You’ll find several easy walking and hiking trails in the reserve, which are dotted with benches and feature breathtaking views of the coast. Popular trails include the Sea Lion Point Trail, Cypress Grove Trail and South Shore Trail.

  • What kind of wildlife can I expect to see?

    Depending on the time of year, you may see sea lions and their pups, sea otters, harbor seals, blue whales and humpbacks.
  • Are there any guided tours available?

    You’ll find a schedule of guided walks for the month posted at the entrance station. You may also run into naturalists inside the reserve with scopes for viewing animals, and they will be happy to give you information.
